Spain — the honest, plain-English overview.
Honest prices for a Chueca flat and a Santa Cruz / Albaicín hill-town cottage — what a one-bedroom rents for, the MAD / SVQ airport transfer ranges, the Sol cobblestone reality, the Plaza Mayor 'uneven-floor' wristband-collector shake, and a paced nine-day walk anchored by one AVE Madrid ↔ Seville rail leg and a Córdoba day-trip on the Andalusian cap.
The full report covers the eight chapters below — every chapter travels with the destination, so a reader who has read one report knows where to find everything in the next. Madrid · Andalusia is the anchor for this one.
Eight chapters. Read in any order.
Every destination report ships the same eight chapters — the same outline the Plainbound home uses to describe what is inside. Once a reader has read one report, the next one reads itself.

Rates below draw on Madrid Centro / Salamanca / Chamberí short-let listings sampled Apr through Jul 2026, Seville Santa Cruz / Centro / Triana holiday-let pricing across the Apr-to-Sep Andalusian high season, and Granada Albaicín summer-week rates on the hill terraces. They read as a 1-bedroom base rate in EUR per night (lodging) and EUR per person (meals). The bands are the lowest-quartile to the median for each tier. Outside the band is normally the Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter) high weekend in Seville, the April Feria on the Andalusian calendar, and the August 15 Asunción bank-holiday weekend, when Granada hill-town nightly rates lift 20 to 35 percent across the central Almena axis.

A taxi from the airport
Set-rate airport transfers, common meter scams, and the negotiated ranges locals actually accept — by airport, with sources.
Spain’s two airports a Madrid-and-Andalusia trip actually uses: Madrid Barajas Adolfo Suárez (MAD, north-east of the city on the M-12 corridor) for the Madrid entry, and Seville San Pablo (SVQ, north of the city on the A-4 Madrid-Seville ring) for the Andalusian transfer. MAD is roughly 13 km north-east of Puerta del Sol; SVQ is roughly 11 km north-west of the Cathedral. The figures below reflect AENA / Metro Madrid published guidance, the Metro Madrid Line 8 tariff band, the TUSSAM / Airport Sevilla bus line, and ride-share pulls from the Free Now / Cabify sheet. They are bands, not a floor or a roof — late-evening arrival lifts the metered band 15 to 25 percent, and a pre-pay at the airport dispatch desk keeps the meter off.

- AENA — Seville San Pablo (SVQ) ground-transport / airport bus rate card
- Metro Madrid — accessibility / step-free stations statement (Consorcio Regional)
- TUSSAM — Seville urban transit / bus accessibility statement (Andalusian government)
- Free Now / Cabify — Madrid and Seville published surge sheet (Aug 2026)
- Renfe / ADIF — published AVE Madrid ↔ Seville and Media Distancia Andalusia fare card
Neighborhoods that fit a slower pace
Flat walks, elevators, well-lit evening streets, pharmacies on the corner, and a hospital no more than twenty minutes away.
Four picks — two Madrid picks (Chueca / Justicia, the central-grid residential and shopping belt; Salamanca / Recoletos, the Castellana-side residential and shopping core), one Seville pick (Santa Cruz / Centro, the cathedral-and-garden hill quarter), and one Granada pick (Albaicín / Realejo, the hill-terrace Moorish-era quarter). Each is selected against the same anchors the rest of the destination list uses: flat walk to groceries, daytime pharmacy within a block, working transit to the hospital, and an evening street that is well-lit and lively without being loud. The Chueca 1-bedroom, the Recoletos 1-bedroom, the Santa Cruz 1-bedroom, and the Realejo hill-terrace all give a slower-50-plus trip an older-friendlier fit — flat modern pavement on the Metro Madrid corridor, well-signed pharmacies, and a 24-hour SSN rota for the same-day emergency.

Mobility, hearing, and medication
Cobblestones, step counts, pharmacy brands, whether a chair is reachable at the museum, and how pharmacies handle U.S. prescriptions.
Spain is approachable, but the older quarters of Madrid Centro Histórico and the Albaicín hill terraces were not built for a slower pace. Below is what actually helps a slower trip — from the Metro Madrid step-free station list and the TUSSAM step-on boarding to the Consejo General de Colegios Farmacéuticos on-call rota, and the Hospital U. La Paz (Madrid) and Hospital Virgen del Rocío (Seville) 24-hour A&E coverage. None of this replaces a doctor; it is just the practical detail on the ground for the first-time visitor.
- Metro Madrid — accessibility / step-free stations statement (Consorcio Regional)
- TUSSAM — Seville urban transit / bus accessibility statement (Andalusian government)
- Consejo General de Colegios Farmacéuticos — 24h pharmacy rota (Madrid / Seville / Granada)

Customs that matter — and the ones that are overblown
Tipping, greetings, dress, the small courtesies that open doors, and a frank note on which warnings travel-blog wisdom skips past.
Customs that matter on a 50-plus Spain trip — tipping (modest, applied at sit-down venues), the vermut / caña (the pre-lunch vermouth or draught beer ritual at the bar on the corner), and the small courtesies that open doors at the bar on the strip. The overblown warnings (the obligatorio tip at sit-down restaurants, the tapas-free Patios-Andalusian tourism-web rumour, the metro+tip pressure) are flagged separately so the travel-blog wisdom gets a quick clean-up. Where the Spain-specific advice differs from the rest of the Mediterranean basin, the line below says so.
Common scams, named plainly
The trick that hits first-time visitors in each city, with the simplest way to deflect it.
Scams to know, and the deflection. The following are the patterns an older traveller meets at the MAD arrivals hall, on the Plaza Mayor / Puerta del Sol pedestrian strip (the connected walking square carrying off-Gran-Vía foot traffic), and on the Seville Santa Cruz / Triana riverside walk. There is no neighbourhood-rating on this page — that is a hazard to claim, and chapter 3 covers the picks instead. Each scam below was spotted in policia.es (Spanish national police) reporting during 2024 to 2026 and in El País / El Mundo tourist-press updates.

A two-week itinerary you can actually walk
Paced for tired feet, with rest days, long lunches, and one train ride that simplifies everything.
Nine days, paced for tired feet. One long-haul flight to MAD for the Madrid entry, one AVE rail leg (Madrid Atocha ↔ Sevilla Santa Justa via the Campania-like Andalusia corridor, the southbound A-4 corridor), and a careful split between the Madrid three-night block, the Córdoba day-trip from Seville on day 6, and the Seville five-night Andalusian ring. The Semana Santa high-season in Seville and the August 15 / Asunción bank-holiday weekend in Granada are the highest-volume tides — book the Chueca / Justicia / Salamanca / Santa Cruz / Albaicín lodgings early if your dates touch those weeks. We rate the days Light, Light-plus, or Busier, so the busier ones can become a rest afternoon on the next leg.

Emergency contacts, in plain English
The number to call, the English-speaking hospital, the embassy after-hours line, and what your travel-insurance card gets you.
A short list of numbers, with notes — the 112 line is national, multilingual at the central desk, and works on any country mobile network; the Policía Nacional line on 091 covers the Madrid / Seville / Granada police-report side; the Guardia Civil line on 062 covers the same emergency routing. Emergency-cell lines open in 24/7 after-hours rotations; the FCDO Spain travel advice feed itself was last reviewed 13 Aug 2026 (chapter 8 keeps the older FCDO stamp).
